If you are like me today, you are sitting at home and wondering if you should have reserved the Nintendo 3DS or wondering if you should trek out to the stores tomorrow (or maybe at midnight) to pick it up. I've honestly been holding off until I see some better games come out. Like it or not, the 3DS is here to stay. It's the successor to the Nintendo DS. It's more powerful than the Nintendo DS and even if developers aren't sold on 3D technology, they will take their games to it. So I wouldn't let the fear of the Nintendo 3DS turning into the next Nintendo Virtual Boy scare you away from a day one purchase. It won't flop that bad. Nintendo won't let it. In recent weeks, we've seen Nintendo back away from their stance of having only 3D games on the Nintendo 3DS.
The only thing that should turn you away from a day one purchase, in my opinion, would be the lackluster launch game lineup. Unfortunately, it's not going to get any better as April isn't going to see any new 3DS game releases either. Eventually the game support will be there. May, June and July looks to have some of the bigger game titles coming out. Beyond that, we are still waiting to hear solid release dates for games. Hopefully Nintendo will announce the release date (and it will be soon) for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3DS at E3 this year.
I know I've heard some people say "but Nintendo will be releasing a new version of the 3DS with better battery life and it'll be smaller!" Sure, they'll release another 3DS. No doubt about it. However, it's going to be AT LEAST 18 months before we see that happen.
So what should you do? It's up to you to decide. I think if you have the money and don't mind the current launch titles and waiting a month for more games...go for it. Hell, if you have a Nintendo DSi or DSi XL, there are some trade-in deals at Walmart and GameStop that can give you up to $100 in trade-in credit. Might as well take advantage of these deals while they last and while the trade-in value is still high on these systems.
