So if you listen to the media, excluding us, you know that the problem with the antenna has hit epic proportions. We have five iPhone 4s in our family and we've only had one problem and that's with the proximity sensor. In regards to dropped calls, no signal, dropped bars; Nothing. No problems at all.
According to Steve Jobs, Apple CEO, only .55% of iPhone owners have complained to Apple Care about the issue.
The issue that the media and .55% of iPhone owners are complaining about is about the "death grip." See the iPhone 4's steel band is three separate antenna that handle GSM, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, etc. These three antenna are separated by three black dividers. Now according to some when you cross the two antenna across the gap it shorts the signal causing signal degradation. Some users have noticed bars falling and calls dropping while some haven't been able to even reproduce the signal degradation.
Apple has stated that all smartphones suffer from this problem and during their press conference today demonstrated this with smartphones on stage. Apple did admit that no software fix will fix this problem with the iPhone 4 or any smartphone. Apple has since release 4.0.1 which included a new or rather correct algorithm that correctly displays signal strength.
Today Apple announced that they are looking into the problem and doing everything they can to make it better. Steve Jobs said that until September 30th if you've purchased an iPhone 4 or plan on purchasing one, Apple will give you a choice of cases for free, including the impossible to find Apple Bumper.
Is this enough from Apple? I think so. I have yet to physically see an iPhone 4 have this problem and I have had no more dropped calls then my older iPhones. Personally I see no problem with Apple offering cases or a full refund if they like. If the iPhone is so bad and causing so many problems why stick with it? The iPhone as well as many other smart phones should be kept in a case. These phones are no longer toys and need to be protected. I've been using my iPhone 4, stupidly, without a case and each day I am thankful I haven't dropped it.
With the minimal amount of returns and complaints and I think it's commendable that Apple is offering free cases to everyone till September 30th.
