There are a ton of tower defence games available for the PC, iPhone, and iPad but none as polished and as much fun as PopCap’s Plants vs Zombies HD.

Plants vs Zombies HD ReviewWhat is Plants vs Zombies?  Since PvZ first came out and was all the rage, I asked the same question.  The point of PvZ is to defend your house against a zombie horde using various plants so they don’t enter your home and eat your brain.  There are a total of 5 levels, Backyard (2 levels day and night), Pool (Day/Night with fog), and Roof with each of these levels creating a whole new scenario with new types of zombies to defend against.  Unlike other tower defense games, the zombies walk in a straight line and don’t curve around obstacles through out the level.

The play field is simple.  The yard has 5 rows and 9 columns in which you can plant seeds to defend your home.  After a few seconds head start, the zombies start slowly, for the most part, walking towards your home.  At first glance it seems boring, I agree, but with the various different seeds and many different zombies, PvZ will give you hours, if not days, of fun.  Frankly I can’t put it down.

In the beginning of each level you are given a choice of seeds to pick and use for that level against the horde.  Since your inventory slots are limited, you have to choose what types of seeds to use which can be quite a challenge.  At first the plants are simplistic like the single shot Pea Shooter or a cherry bomb but as you complete more levels more seeds are unlocked like the Gatling Pea or the Cabbage-Pult.  In PvZ there are 48 different seeds that are unlocked throughout the game each with their own different offensive, defensive and production capabilities.

Plants vs Zombies HD Review There are 26 different Zombies in PvZ.  None of them are scary and are more cartoon like zombies so no worries about the kids being scared or having nightmares.  Each one of these zombies are laughable and will leave you curious as to what could the next zombie possibly be.  Every zombie is different and all of them have their own special characteristics and are unlocked as you further progress through the game.  Some of the zombies included are the Newspaper Zombie, who charges when you knock his paper out of his hands, the Dancing Zombie that summons other zombies and dances to music like Michael Jackson’s Thriller, and the Zombie Bobsled Team which ride a bobsled onto your lawn but not before the Zomboni Zombie who needs to lay down the ice for the Bobsled.

Even after the 50 level Adventure there is still more to play.  Once the Adventure is completed, new modes are unlocked; Quickplay which allows you to play any level in Adventure without having to play all the way through and Mini-games; which include games like Wall-nut Bowling, Bobsled Bonanza, and Invisi-Ghoul where the zombies are invisible.  Also unlocked is Survival where you have to survive a different types of challenges.  The iPad version of the game has an exclusive mini-game called Buttered Popcorn.

Plants vs Zombies HD ReviewThe soundtrack to PvZ is great!  I have had some of the music stuck in my head!  Sound effects which include zombie grunts and groans, all sound genuine and never detract from the immersive feeling of PvZ.  Graphically it’s great.  Animations are clear, crisp without jerky movements.  On the iPad the games graphics and color just pops.  PvZ HD feels like it was created for the iPad and wasn’t ported.  A game like PvZ fits in on the iPad with it’s touch display.  I’ve played Plants vs Zombie on my PC and love it, but using the iPad gives PvZ another layer of fun especially since you can use more than one finger.

Overall, Plants vs Zombies HD should be one of the first purchases you make once you get an iPad or iPhone.  If you don’t own an iPad or an iPhone, PvZ is also available on the iPhone and PC/Mac.  It’s a great game that will give you hours and hours, if not days, of fun that will keep you coming back for more.  I’ve always hated zombie games, but games like PvZ and Left 4 Dead are changing my mind and bringing me into a genre that is just so much fun.  Like a mentioned earlier, PvZ is not your typical scary zombie game.  PvZ is more whimsical and laughable which makes PvZ enjoyable by everyone.
