NBA 2K11 - Can't play "classic" teams online

NBA 2K11 is an extremely good basketball game, but I really have one grief with the game.  You cannot play as a "classic" team online against someone else.  Even if you just want to play an unranked game against a friend using one of the classic Michael Jordan teams.  Not gonna happen.  So you can't have your friend play as the 90-91 Lakers (with Magic Johnson) VS you and the 90-91 Chicago Bulls (classic Jordan teams) and recreate the 91 NBA Championship.  Or match up the 2010 LA Lakers VS the 91 Chicago Bulls while playing online.

I can understand them not wanting the powerful classic teams in the ranked games.  I understand that.  But honestly, it doesn't even matter.  The classic teams aren't super teams that are 100x more powerful than the 2010 LA Lakers as a team.  It doesn't make that much sense.

Am I missing something?
